  • SOME NOT
    By: JENNIFER ELLIS

When looking to join a gym or health club, there are some obvious things we all consider, such as convenience to our home or work, whether they have the kind of equipment that we like, and of course cost. There are, however, some factors which are not as obvious that should be kept in mind as you make a decision.

1.Does the gym staff have academic education regarding weight training? If they don't have a sports medicine or exercise science degree, they should at least have some sort of certification from a recognized organization such as the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

2.Is the temperature of the gym maintained at a comfortable level? Temperatures that are too warm make working out extremely uncomfortable, and can even lead to dehydration. If it is kept too cold, joint and muscle injuries are more likely.

3.Is the gym clean and the equipment well maintained? Obviously, a lot of germs can get passed when people are exerting, and especially when sweating. For this reason, the equipment should be wiped down frequently. For safety sake, check the seats on benches and machines and make sure they are stable, as well as to make sure the cables do not appear worn or likely to break.

4.Is the air in the gym fresh and well circulated? With so many people exercising in what is often a crowded space, this becomes extremely important. The air should never smell stale or musty or feel stuffy.

5.Does the gym have an emergency medical plan in place? Unfortunately, accidents and other medical events are not uncommon while working out. It is therefore essential that the staff of the gym are trained in CPR and first aid in case someone becomes ill or injured.

    Be safe and have fun!
