  • Prescription Drugs Are in Drinking Water
    By: LARRY TAYLOR

Prescription drugs are in drinking water. What can you do to protect yourself from drugs in the drinking water? I am not talking about some third world country. Believe it or not, I am talking about right here in the United States. This is a critical danger that affects the water supply of the entire nation.

    Low Doses of Antibiotics

It sounds like the plot of a bad movie; people taking low doses of antibiotics without knowing it until they are no longer able to fight off even simple infections. Believe it or not, this is rapidly becoming a stark reality. Our prolonged low level exposure to antibiotics in our water is one of the primary causes for the recent spread of MRSA or medication resistant staph infections. These infections are very serious, can often prove fatal, and are becoming increasingly more common.

    How Can We Protect Ourselves?

Cities seem to do little about the drugs in the drinking water. In fact, it is not even required that they test for them. This fact is what has driven me and many people like me to purchase a water filtration system for my home. I purchased a multi-stage unit that filters the water for my entire home, which also means I am not inhaling or absorbing drugs from the steam and water in my shower. The system also has the added benefit of removing rust from my water, which means that my white laundry actually stays white.

    How Effective Are Water Filters?

These systems are pretty effective, and cost only about ten cents per gallon to operate. They remove chemicals, lead, rust, drugs, and chlorine from my water. One of the best things about the multi-stage units is that they leave in the valuable trace minerals that our bodies need to stay healthy. It is comforting not having to worry about prescription drugs in the drinking water.

In short, the problems facing our water supply are far greater than our cities are equipped to handle. The transition to more efficient filtration systems would be incredibly expensive and the transition would have to be quite carefully planned. The truth is that no huge changes are planned for municipal water facilities right now.

    What Can You Do Personally?

This truth leaves us to do something at home about drugs in the drinking water. While it may be inconvenient and add to our monthly bills, the health benefits are undeniable. The ability to do something to prevent outbreaks is one of the best tools we have at our disposal. I urge you to research your local water and look into multi-stage filter for your home as I did for mine. The benefits are simply immeasurable.
