In its most basic form, bacterial vaginitis is a bacterial infection that affects the vaginal region of a woman. This condition is primarily caused by the imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the vagina. Simply put, there is just too much harmful bacteria in the region, which is why bacterial vaginitis progresses. It is inevitable to have both harmful and healthy bacteria in the vagina. The ideal situation here is to have bacteria that are mostly healthy, and not harmful. This way, the much-needed balance will still be implemented. Lactobacillus bacteria are healthy bacteria commonly found in the vagina. Bateroides, Mobiluncus, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Mycoplasma hominis, on the other hand, are harmful bacteria found in the area. Too much of these harmful bacteria can cause bacterial vaginitis.
There are also other possible causes that can lead to the condition of bacterial vaginitis. These include medications, organisms, and irritants. Irritants can come in spray products that contain chemicals that can irritate the vaginal region. These can also be in the form of clothing that contains a lot of chemicals. Aside from that, bacterial vaginitis can be caused by the passing of organisms from one partner to another while in the midst of sexual activity.
As for medication, well, you just might be surprised to know the ironic fact that there are indeed medications that can lead to the progression of bacterial vaginitis. The majority of these include hormone based medications, douches, contraceptives, and antibiotic drugs.
The proper way of reaching the diagnosis is through the conduction of a pelvic exam. A sample of the patients vaginal fluid has to be collected to determine the infection that the woman has, if it is indeed bacterial vaginitis. However, you have to make sure to see a licensed professional to acquire such diagnosis. Self-diagnosis and self-treatment will not do you any good at all. Ultimately, you might do something or consume something that just might worsen the condition. The sad thing about this is that there are several complications that can arise from bacterial vaginitis that is mistreated.
